Such beautiful soft tones in this composition – like a sunrise! The silver pendant is from the Hazara people of Afghanistan – look at the photo of the rear to see its aged patina and some dings, but don’t let that deter you. It’s from the late 1800’s. Imagine how many wells this necklace has gone to, how many miles walked across that huge continent. How many times it was exchanged for something more pressing, like medicine. Mixed with composite Roman glass beads, from Afghanistan, found by Unesco in 2007 when they were putting down rural wells. Fresh water pearls give this piece is luminous pop. It’s light to wear, and lovely to behold.
Large and highly idiosyncratic Vintage Afghan / Middle Eastern amulet with script. The shape of this pendant is ancient and has most probably developed from Chinese lock amulets. In Central Asia and the Middle East, it has acquired the shape of a frog or (turned upside down) that of a tree of life. Both are symbols for fertility and abundance.
